Education & Qualifications

Despite the challenges of retinitis pigmentosa, a disease which eventually caused blindness and severe hearing impairment, Brian J. Hubbard, LICSW and Board Certified Diplomate in Clinical Social Work, has lived a successful and personally rewarding life.

Throughout years of successfully meeting challenges and helping others to do the same, he has developed, after thirty years experience as a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker(LICSW), a system of "Empowerment Therapy" which helps countless numbers of people turn disabilities and other traumatic losses into strengths.

He now shares this unique system with others through writing, speaking engagements, and personal counseling.  This counseling now involves his specialized Empowerment Therapy online, which is what this web site is all about.  To learn in greater detail Brian’s qualifications and accomplishments, click on his other website www.brianjhubbard.com  As you will see, he has obtained his undergraduate degree from the University of  Massachusetts/Amherst in 1969 with a B.A. degree, majoring in sociology and psychology.  After three years of service with the Rhode Island  Department of Human Services, he attended Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia, receiving his Masters of Social Work  degree, specializing in clinical social work.  After working for a variety of agencies from 1975 through 1985, Brian opened his private practice in clinical social work and psychotherapy in Newport, RI.  In the meantime, he was licensed as a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker, the highest level of licensure,  in Massachusetts in 1982 while receiving the same licensure in RI in 1989, the first year the licensure became available as mandated and registered with the RI Department of Health.   In fact, Brian served on the Committee on Social Work Licensure.  Brian obtained high standing with the clinical social work profession by being registered with the National Association of Social Worker’s (NASW) Register of Clinical Social Workers in 1984, while becoming a Board Certified Diplomate in Clinical Social Work in 1988.  In 1989, Brian founded and directed Counseling for Independent Living, Inc. (CIL),the nation’s first program to provide clinical mental health services to the disabled and their families.  The development of CIL led to many grants, two from the United States Department of Education, the second grant proposal, written solely by Brian, ranked first nationwide.  The development of CIL also led to many nationwide lectures and visits with Congressional leaders in Washington, DC as well as with prominent leaders in rehabilitation, civic organizations and businesses.  He has lectured consumer groups extensively on a national basis and has provided countless workshops to other professional groups on a national basis as well.  Anyone with any kind of physical disability, chronic illness or emotional problem resulting from a significant and/or traumatic loss  will undoubtedly benefit immensely from Mr. Hubbard's system of empowerment therapy.

As stated above,it is very important to note that Brian J. Hubbard's products and services are by no means restricted to the disabled. His services and products are equally beneficial for any person who has suffered from a loss whether it be a natural loss (e.g. getting older) or a traumatic loss (e.g. loss of a job or a loved one through death, divorce or relocation) Since everyone has had to deal with a loss, natural and/or traumatic, Brian J. Hubbard's services and products apply to anyone having difficulty coping with losses.  In the past thirty years, Brian Hubbard has served thousands of consumers, approximately one quarter of them being people with disabilities or chronic illnesses.  In addition to treating emotional disorders associated with physical disabilities/chronic illnesses, he has treated post traumatic stress disorders (PTSD), major adjustment disorders, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, compulsive disorders, psychomatic disorders, major personality disordersand conduct disorders associated with children.  The vast amount of his consumer satisfaction surveys have been excellent.  “Although I take great pride in my training,  professional qualifications and thirty years of highly diversified clinical experience, I take equal, if not greater pride in my empathic style of practicing motivational strategies of shared and supportive collaboration rather than authoritative confrontation.  It is the fine art of humanistic and client-centered therapy that enables the gifted therapist to balance this sensitive style without compromising one’s professional identity, one’s legitimate use of non-threatening authority.”  Brian J. Hubbard, LICSW,BCD
